Key Responsibilities
Various platforms provide the core structure for data capture used for reporting purposes. Managing data integrity within our systems is essential, as it provides the base information for PnL and exposure analysis. A strong understanding of physical deal economics and their key components (freight, demurrage, finance, hedging, pricing) is critical, as one of the core responsibilities is the accurate setup of inception profit and loss (PnL).
Once the inception PnL has been established and agreed with the commercial team, daily changes in PnL and exposure driven by underlying market conditions, deal economics, basis risk, and mark-to-market valuations are analyzed, and a daily variance commentary is produced.
Other key responsibilities include ensuring that all basis risk and volumetric positions are accurate, that appropriate hedging and pricing actions are taken to mitigate the company’s risk, and that all executions are correctly allocated within the trading system.
The reconciliation of all estimates used in PnL with final invoice values ensures that trading PnL is finalized and fully aligned with statutory requirements. This information is then used to drive the trade ledgers in the statutory accounts. The role also places strong emphasis on the continuous review and enhancement of processes and systems to improve the accuracy and timeliness of reporting.
While a broad range of skills is required to perform the role at a high level, elements of the core activities can be shaped to ensure that the successful candidate gains exposure to every facet of oil trading. The role actively encourages experience across different business functions and departments, enabling candidates to intuitively assess changing circumstances and their impact on trading PnL, and to develop a deep understanding of the industry.
